Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

Sometimes you encounter situations so terrible that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer magnitude of unadulterated absurdity and just gives up, opting for laughter as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of morning hair. I couldn't make it to look right. As I was scrambling out the door, I fell and dropped my lunch all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for website school.
I sweating. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. was a catastrophe. I couldn'tthink straight.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
